Besides giving you a boost of energy in the morning thanks to caffeine, coffee is also rich in antioxidants beneficial for heart health, not to mention providing many other benefits.
But despite all these benefits, bad coffee-drinking habits can lead to weight gain without you even realizing it.
In a report published by the American magazine "Eat This, Not That," we reviewed the reasons why your favorite beverage can be the cause of extra kilograms.
1- Your coffee has too many sweeteners:
It's best to keep your order simple to limit the sweeteners in your coffee. According to nutritionist Lauren Harris-Binks, the American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar consumption to 24 grams per day for women and 36 grams for men. Keep in mind that some large cups of coffee served in cafes can contain up to 80 grams of sugar.
2- Considering Coffee a Meal:
Lauren explained that "coffee is not a meal," pointing out that protein, fiber, vegetables, and fruits are key to a healthy, balanced diet that helps you feel full for longer and control hunger.
Drinking a cup of coffee, which is high in calories, sugar, and fat, cannot provide the nutrients your body needs. Furthermore, the hunger you feel after drinking only a cup of coffee can lead to overeating later.
3- Always Adding Whipped Cream to Your Coffee:
According to Lauren, whipped cream is another thing that makes your coffee bad for your diet. Whipped cream contains no nutrients other than being high in calories, which, if consumed in excess, can lead to weight gain.
4. Using Artificial Sweeteners:
Don't let these seemingly healthy options fool you; they're not healthy at all. According to nutritionist Lauren, artificial sweeteners may seem like convenient, calorie-free alternatives to add to your morning coffee, but people who use them are more likely to consume more calories and, therefore, have a higher risk of obesity compared to those who don't.
5. Consuming Canned Coffee:
While pre-made coffee may seem like a quick option, these drinks are loaded with sugar. For example, a single can of iced coffee can contain 260 calories and 29 grams of added sugar, making it the worst drink to start your day with.
