Are you cleaning your food right?

We have often been told to exercise caution while eating out. But even the food that we have at home might be laced with dangerous bacteria that may make us sick. It is very important that you eat food which is clean and free from any kind of disease bearing germs.

Here are these tips for a clean food free of bacteria and diseases..

- Don't keep the fruits and veggies brought from the market directly into the refrigerator. The dirt and grime sticking to them is most likely to infect the food kept in the fridge. If you do not have time to wash and dry them before refrigerating them, just keep them in air tight bags or boxes.

- Even your packed bread from grocer's might have mould growth hence check it thoroughly before eating. It is advisable to toast it before eating rather than eating raw.

- Soak fruits and veggies brought from the market (except potatoes, onions, garlic) in saline water for 10 minutes, then wash them in running water and pat dry to kill the germs and remove pesticides.

- Keep potatoes in a dry, airy place but not in the refrigerator as their starch starts getting converted into sugar below 4 degree Celsius. Keep your potatoes in a dark place as they form poisonous alkaloids under light.

- Store eggplants, beans, tomatoes and bell peppers below 10 degree Celsius.

- Cottage cheese and all types of cheese should be stored between 1-4 degree Celsius.

- Cabbage, lettuce, spinach and other leafy vegetables should be cleaned several times with saline water and then placed in a bowl of ice cold water before consuming.

- Avoid salads and raitas when you are eating out.

- Do not drink fresh juices outside, however tempting they might seem.

- It is common belief that sea food and fish should be avoided. The reason is that due to there is a greater risk of spoilage while transporting them and the fish is also exposed to all kinds of microbial and industrial contaminants due to free flow of water. Hence deep sea fishes like tuna, salmon, mackerel, black pomfret, trouts are a safer bet than fresh water ones.

- To build up immunity add pepper chili, mint, coriander, turmeric, lemon, fenugreek seeds, almonds, onion , wheat grass, kale in your food.
