Experts from Columbia University have published the results of studies indicating nutrients linked to insomnia and sleep disturbances.
An article published by MedicalXpress stated that experts at the university, during their research on the issue of insomnia, conducted studies in which they analyzed the diet of more than 50,000 women, and the results of the research showed that foods rich in carbohydrates such as white bread and rice raise blood sugar levels and cause insomnia.
Assistant professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and supervisor of the mentioned research, James Ganguech, said: "In the event of high blood sugar levels, the body begins to secrete insulin to reduce these levels, and this may affect the secretion of other hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which may in turn cause Sleep disorders".
He pointed out that eating products rich in concentrated carbohydrates causes insulin levels in the body to suddenly rise and then fall, which negatively affects the metabolism in the brain.
The doctor advised to stay away from foods that contain concentrated carbohydrates before bedtime, and replace them with other foods such as fruits and grains, and also indicated that drinking a glass of milk with honey at night helps regulate metabolism.
